It would be unwise to assume that shipwreck sites found in such areas represent simple, Pompeii-like events.
Stratified samples represent different levels of random sampling nested within the larger survey area. Stratified sampling can also be done according to the probability of occurrence of sites or objects within the survey unit. For example, if previous work had shown that sites were more likely to occur in forested areas than in grassland, one could oversample the forested unit by looking at, say, 30% or 35% of its area while sampling the grassland at a constant, say, 20%–25%. Oversampling is a useful technique for finding more sites or objects in subunits of restricted size, especially when one also needs a larger sample of items from those subunits for comparative purposes later on.
Prior to embarking on the survey, the team analyzed the database of recorded casualties, focusing on 215 relatively well-documented cases, and found that roughly 15% were schooners, 15% ships and brigs, about 10% barks, and 13% engine-powered vessels. The rest were specialized ships such as gunboats, tankers, and small fishing boats. One hundred and seventy-two of these vessels contained known cargoes, with lumber, agricultural products, cotton, and construction materials leading the list. Many of the vessels carrying construction materials were bound for Fort Jefferson, the largest of the generation of forts built after the War of 1812, mainly along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.
