When universities charge graduated fees, the evidence for the apparent worth of the product will be the ratio that the outputs, degree awards, stand to one another in the competitive market. A ratio already prejudged by the graduated fee and supported by the social mechanism. Pressure to liberalise the education market, to remove legal, regulatory and bureaucratic barriers distorting ‘market competition’ has followed from the commercialisation of the sector.

Already out on a limb, truly replaceable academics will find that their own activities appear to be not only insignificant, but also irrational; as useless as armchair thinking. Those with an eye to self-preservation will attempt to demonstrate their productive efficiency, by attracting funding. Carving a niche, protecting but ultimately betraying their imaginative spontaneity, academics are already so heavily committed to what is endorsed in their isolated sphere, so at odds with endless extolling of virtues of interdisciplinarity, that we no longer desire that which is not authenticated through the arduous process of peer review endorsement.
