Indeed, multiple attempts, perhaps encouraged by the claim of an ancient commentator on Sophocles’ Philoctetes 99 that Sophocles is attacking contemporary politicians, have been made to read characters of the play as representative of late fifth-century public figures in Athens.
OC 1640; E. Hipp. 207; Pl. R. 329b, 440c-d. At E. Tr. 987, Hecuba commends suicide to Helen as the behaviour of a truly cemma_a woman and at 727 Talthybius instructs Andromache to endure her troubles eqcem_r.
