The classic Stallings period of ca. p. involved intensive settlement at Stallings Island, Mims Point, Ed Marshall, and several other locations on the middle Savannah, as well as nearby enclaves on Brier Creek and the Ogeechee River.
Ortmann and Kidder’s computer-aided petrographic analysis of Poverty Point pottery provides some support for Gibson’s hypothesis. They conclude that the Tchefuncte sherds they examined were manufactured on site. By contrast, Stoltman’s petrographic analysis of three Tchefuncte sherds from Poverty Point suggests that they were not manufactured on site. Hays and Weinstein use several lines of argument to suggest that it is highly unlikely the Tchefuncte complex developed at Poverty Point itself. St.
