These various methodologies of HFI, ILS and AR + M inter-relate strongly and each has a complementary role to play within system development. Scheduled and resourced appropriately they vividly demonstrate the seamlessness of operability, maintainability and availability throughout the system life cycle. Thus, for example, operability does not end when maintainability and/or availability starts or vice versa because each contributes in various ways to the evolution of system design. A good example of the manner in which they seamlessly contribute to one another can be found with the ILS Use Case Study.
These may refer to both individual and team achievement levels. High levels of operability and interoperability should be achieved through the use of standardised design features. The design of human–computer interaction should aim for ease of operation and training. The layout of the displays and controls should take full account of the characteristics of the potential users. The layout of the workstation shall take account of the need for users to work in a seated position while others may be positioned around it.
However ’twas not ever thus!
