There have been investigations on the specific gravity of eggs and larvae of marine fishes (Blaxter 1969; Coombs 1981), but from the standpoint of egg and larval drift it would be worthwhile to examine the relationship between the depth of neutral buoyancy for the eggs and larvae and the currents present at that depth. Buoyancy regulation in clupeoid larvae (which have swim bladders) has been studied (Blaxter and Ehrlich 1974; Hunter and Sanchez 1976), but it is not known how well the larvae of other species {especially those lacking swim bladders} can actually select and maintain a preferred depth, especially in the face of currents or turbulence.
