Thus, GPRS expedites mobile connectivity to the Internet or to a corporate Intranet. The Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) is a third-generation broadband, packet based system used for the transmission of text, digitized voice, video, and multimedia at data rates up to and possibly higher than 1 1 Mbps, offering a consistent set of services to mobile computer and phone users. Based on the GSM communication standard, UMTS, endorsed by major standards bodies and manufacturers, is the planned standard for mobile users around the world by 2002.

These signals can be further combined into larger chunks for transmission over high-bandwidth core trunks. At the receiving end the channels ate split, and the digital signals are converted back to analog and delivered to the received phone. Initially the synchronization of signals was not necessary. It was the baseband signal that was transferred and only one channel was available per line, requiring large quantities of wiring to meet the growing communication demand. Nowadays, multiplexing techniques permit the simultaneous transfer of multiple data flows over the same line.

There are quality of service characteristics that are inherent in any type of service, and quality demands and user expectations vary accordingly. In a telephone conversation the transmission must be carried out in real-time, while in data communications the paramount consideration is the elimination of transmission errors. In the past, telecommunications networks have been designed to provide for one of these requirement sets. Today they can handle both. The transition is as we noted, from single service networks to integrated services ones.
