The next chapter of the book begins the dashboard development set of chapters in the book, starting with the steps used to build a simple dashboard. [ 41 ] Creating a Simple Dashboard Dashboards are used to quickly and easily monitor the overall health of a business area by providing executive-level insight into key business metrics.

The Application Programming Interface (API) in Interactive Reporting provides the ability to access objects and events used by the core application. The object properties and event behaviors are orchestrated using JavaScript code to drive a desired application behavior typically in the form of an end-user interface or business application. The goal of this chapter is to provide users with an introduction to JavaScript and the Application Programming Interface. The chapter will begin with an in-depth look at the Interactive Reporting API and will conclude with an introduction to fundamental concepts of JavaScript.
