At Billown Quarry Site at least two pits can be assigned to the later fifth millennium cal BC. The largest is a 3m deep shaft, F376, that may have started as a localized natural collapse structure formed by glacial till sinking into a solution hollow or doline in the underlying limestone bedrock. Enlargement of the natural feature is evident, and the resulting hole was sealed by oak planks that later caught fire. Charcoal from one plank has been dated to 4899–4719 cal BC (Beta-110691: 5910±70 BP).
