The inner hill country, however, was covered with dense maquis, an obstacle to easy settlement in this period. As a result only a few of the fortified enclosures and tells were in the hills. Exceptional are those at Wadi el-Bir (Site 164) and Baṭn Umm Nari (Site 169), both situated geographical and settlement data 35 deep inside the hilly zone. The reason for their locations is probably the neighbouring water sources: however, there are also water sources with no Early Bronze Age sites. Wadi el-Bir is an example of an Early Bronze Age city.
Such was the case at Jemah Tubrus and Ferasin, both abandoned. Of a total of 28 modern Arab villages within the Survey area, 24 were inhabited during the Ottoman period. Most of the population was concentrated in villages whose centre was fortified and the poor state of security and the shrinking population made it difficult for family farms to survive. Even the three cities of the region, Jenin, Tulkarm, and Shechem, were small and wretched townships.
