During the 1950s and 1960s the average earnings of working-class and middle-class households increased substantially. Between 1955 and 1969 average weekly earnings rose by about 130 per cent.

The reasons for this boom were a combination of the factors discussed earlier in this chapter. These various processes conspired to create a new experience, or consciousness, of time and space.
