On March 8th, 1801, Abercromby’s force landed on the beach at Abukir in the face of fierce opposition from French forces entrenched in the dunes. It was a brilliant but costly assault, a kind of premonition of D-Day. One thousand British troops, a fifth of the entire force, were killed getting ashore. But Abercromby’s force gained a beachhead and marched on to Alexandria, where a pitched battle was fought in the shadow of the old Roman fort.
