The ego can’t be neutral; it can’t see you or this very moment as it actually is—that would be pure awareness itself. So, in one way or another, your ego has to make you stand out, make you special. It does this in one of two ways: by telling you a story about yourself that makes you either more or less than you really are. When the ego’s stories make you smaller, I call it depressive specialness. And when it puffs you up with a sense of superiority, I call that grandiose specialness. You might presume that being superior is a better or more desirable form of specialness; but in fact, superiority cuts you off from intimacy with others, encourages denial, and leads to poor judgment in many ways.
She spoke of a feeling of warmth rising up inside of her, particularly in her chest, and the vision of the underwater forest faded away. Simultaneously, she noticed that the pain was completely gone.
