The mid-1950s saw the re-emergence of phytolith studies in western Europe. Following the dramatic change in circumstances for German scholars in the 1940s, phytolith studies recommenced in the Principality of Wales, at the University College of North Wales, Bangor. After publications on the micromineralogy of soils in North Wales (Smithson 1953,1954), in the latter of which Smithson describes the appearance of silicified sponge spicules, there appeared the first major investigation of opaline silica deposits in British soils (Smithson 1956).
