Ausgehend von einem philologisch gesicherten Text Verständnis kann nach der Struktur der einzelnen Textsegmente gefragt werden. Für die Elemente, die ein Autor zur Verfügung hat, um einen Text aufzubauen und zu gestalten, spielt die Gattung, in der er sich ausdrückt, eine wichtige Rolle, da sie das Muster ist, das den Textaufbau steuert. Die inhaltliche Analyse der Texte knüpft an die Strukturuntersuchung an, da das Textthema mit der kompositorischen Gestalt des Textes kongruieren sollte.
