One problem with assuming that these casseroles were used in exactly the same way as in north Africa is that fragments of the braziers have rarely been identified in Britain. Though this does occasionally happen, there was obviously often a more organised rubbish-disposal system also in place, so that the rubbish from a variety of different sources was mixed together. To complicate this matter still further, it is appropriate to consider here the phenomenon of structured deposition. Up to the 1980s it is fair to say that rubbish was simply rubbish to most Roman archaeologists.
