On the way back down the metre stick is used to measure the length of the slope as well as the width of the bottom of any ditches and the top of any banks (24). Back at base you can begin to convert your rough notes and drawings into a finished sketch plan (25). The first thing to do is to convert all of the non-standard measurements into metres. Then decide on a scale. As the castle is roughly 200 metres (approx. 650ft) square, a scale of 1:1000 will give an image which will fit on to a sheet of A4 paper.
Climb up the bank to that point, stand up and look again. This second point you fix on is now twice your height above the ditch and so you proceed, climbing the slope and measuring it in multiples of your own height. With some practice this can be accurate to the nearest metre on large banks. The heights of smaller slopes can be estimated using a metre stick as a guide.
