It is now known that a picture of progressive impairment over a period of years, the onset and course of which is gradual, is, in the main, both clinically and neuropathologically indistinguishable from AD. However, as with other diseases, such as cancer, younger people are more rapidly and severely affected.

Memory is not a single process but comprises several aspects. Information is taken in (ie learned), stored and used (ie recalled) at a later time. Some information is held for only a brief time in 'primary' memory, while some is stored more permanently in 'secondary' memory. Secondary memory is relevant to day-to-day living. It has been suggested that remote or long-term memory is a separate process, enabling people to reminisce about past events. Changes in learning and memory abilities have been found in older people.
