But other experts do not go so far, concluding instead that very few single events have a major long-term impact on people’s happiness because life is full of so many events and so many different circumstances. To find out, Lyubomirsky performed another clever study. She asked people to look at pictures and descriptions of a series of desserts and to rank them from most desirable to least. Then, she offered people desserts that they had individually listed as their second or third favorite. She was interested in finding out how receipt of these desserts influenced people’s attitudes toward the desserts. Imagine two people, one happy by nature and the other unhappy, who have listed their top three desserts as cheesecake, ice cream, and banana cream pie.

In measuring the number of good and bad events that happened to these students over the five-year period, Eronen relied on the students to classify the events they experienced as being either good or bad.
