As Goshen-Gottstein has rightly insisted, the Gestalt of the old synagogue Targum remains in tensely problematic, despite the discovery of Codex Neofiti 1. 15 This point was well -enough understood by nineteenth century scholars , but I feel the present generation of Targum experts tends to ignore it. The fact is that the Targum had a purely literary life of its own in the Middle Ages, and all our extant Targumim have gone through a literary phase of development, divorced from their original setting.
