Then we planned to recruit scientists, mainly from the existing fast neutron physics groups, people to man the accelerators and do other necessary experiments at Los Alamos, something on the order of a hundred scientists altogether perhaps. The Ranch School would give us initial housing and more could be built while we got the laboratory started. There was something of a precedent for this since Compton had brought all pile work to Chicago by moving the Princeton and Columbia work there. But this concentration was at a going university, with libraries, machinists, glass-blowers and staff.
I may note parenthetically that almost anybody would have had more experimental experience than Oppenheimer. He had essentially zero laboratory experience. He was an outstanding theorist and did understand the laboratory techniques, but not as an operator. Anyway, I was Compton's choice. I had gone to Chicago thinking I was going to work on the chain reaction with Szilard and Fermi and company, but that part only lasted four months, although I kept charge of my group and tried to do the other stuff too, which was characteristic of the way things went in those wartime days.
