By age 12, Battier played the trumpet so well he was first chair in Birmingham’s annual youth concert orchestra. It was a big youth orchestra, needing 106 chairs for the trumpets alone. He wanted to attend Detroit Country Day in the seventh grade and was accepted with a near-perfect entrance-exam score. What school wouldn’t want a student who, a couple years later, would begin spending his New Year’s Eves listing on index cards the 10 goals he wanted to accomplish over the next year? Some ACC players have had to be slipped past the admissions board, but Battier wasn’t one.
He talked a little trash when he hit a shot and was known to bob his head as he ran back down the court. He got a couple of tattoos, though they weren’t visible when he was in uniform.
