Cognition and speech can emerge along different modalities, which may be more or less dependent or independent of one another. Furthermore, this relationship between cognition and language is not necessarily constant over the course of the child's development. The pre-language phase in the development of the cognitive and communicative aspects of the child's behavior is very important, and emotional experiences in the first five years oflife are important social events that may affect future developments in the child's life.

It is this: in the child's mastery of uttered or vocal speech, he progresses from single words to two-word phrases to simple sentences, and so on. Yet at the semiotic or "meaningful" levd, the meanings that are inherent in the child's utterance begin as though expressing full sentences (the so-called holophrase) and only gradually differentiate to express meanings that correspond to phrases or single words. In short, external speech grows from part to whole; meaning from whole to part. We would express this idea today by saying that early language is highly context dependent or intentionally imbedded, and that, as Grace de Laguna argued, it cannot be comprehended without knowing the context and state in which it is uttered.
